Carolina Thread Trail is a network of regional trails that will cover 15 counties in North and South Carolina and bring together over 2 million people. The goal is to link regional attractions, provide a place for individuals and families to relax, walk, ride bikes, or commune with nature, and create a legacy of conservation in the region. When the project was announced in 2007, Ernest Dwight, president of SouthWood and lifetime resident of the Carolinas, wanted to support this memorable endeavor, so SouthWood committed to donating $50,000 in signage and services over a five-year period. Because the project uses many existing trails, some of which are already branded with their own community's identity, the challenge became identifying the Thread Trail in cooperation with the existing identity - not instead of it. Working in conjunction with the Carolina Thread Trail, the Catawba Lands Conservancy, and designer Mervil Paylor, SouthWood helped craft and engineer multiple sign types to be used along the trails.
